Come September in Toronto all eyes are focused on TIFF. But back-to-school indicates another, equally important occasion: a new theatre season. From Verdi’s Il Trovatore to Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, this month the city’s theatre companies kick off 2012-2013 with a bang.
Il Trovatore
Canadian Opera Company presents Guiseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore, a tale of the vengeful gypsy Azucena, her son Manrico’s romance with the noblewoman Leonora, and his rivalry with the Conte di Luna.
On stage September 29 to October 31 at the Four Seasons Centre.
Death of a Salesman
Soulpepper’s acclaimed production of Arthur Miller’s Tony Award winning play returns, with Joseph Ziegler’s as the prideful, vulnerable Willy Loman, the part which earned him the Dora Award for Outstanding Performance.
On stage September 5 – October 6 at Young Centre for the Performing Arts.
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
Hart House Theatre presents this Tony Award winning play that follows the antics of courtiers Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Runs Sept 21 – Oct 6 at Hart House Theatre.

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre
Through a combination of storytelling, dance and live music, Tawiah M’carthy plays a young man from Ghana who, imprisoned in Canada for a violent crime, tells his cellmates the story of his journey across continents, genders, races, and sexualities.
On stage September 15 – October 7 at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
Tarragon Theatre
From their Scottish ancestry to Kensington Market to Cape Breton, No Great Mischief follows the memories that haunt two brothers as they seek to reconcile their past.
On stage September 11 – October 21 at Tarragon theatre.
