BREEZE DEBUT EP OUT SEPTEMBER 11

Throughout life you will experience an abundance of change. Whether it be the friends you keep, the clothes you wear, the type of music you listen to, or even the bands you play in. Sometimes you just have to float through it all, dropping in and out of what feels right before stumbling upon that perfect bowl of porridge. For Toronto band Breeze, this certainly rings true. Stemming from the pages of Josh Korody’s notebook, each member of Breeze was carefully selected to form the dream-pop super group: Kyle Connolly (Elk), Shawn Dell (Great Bloomers), Dustin Hawthorne (Hot Hot Heat/Islands), and Louise Burns (Louise Burns/Gold & Youth); blending together a mix of talents, ideas and sounds. Although Breeze is a complete product of change – the members all-hailing from different bands – their sound is grounded in the past.
Their two song EP, Paradise (in a while) will be released on a limited pressing of 100 cassette tapes, an old school throwback that perfectly suits their 80s pop sound. The title track opens with a strong beat of a drum and quickly introduces the sound of a hazy guitar that is reminiscent of something you would hear on a John Hughes soundtrack. As the vocals kick in, images of those archetypal teenage love scenes begin to flood the mind. The song remains consistent in melody throughout and has a natural sunny disposition that – even on rainy days – can make everything seem a little brighter. The second track Repent is a darker continuation of Paradise (in a while), beautifully weaving out of the sunshine induced by the former moving into a slower, more full sound that makes you want to kiss the night sky. With a heavier emphasis on the dreamy – almost psychedelic instrumentation, Repent takes this hypothetical teenage love story from the hallways of high school and sets it at night with music that makes for backseat make-outs, a slow-dance at an underground club, or even a naughty game of spin the bottle at a house party.
Paradise (in a while) drops September 11 on Hand Drawn Dracula.
The video for Paradise (in a while) and the single release party will be held this Saturday September 8th, at Day + Night Salon (1389 Dundus Street West).
