As told to Amanda Elizabeth Smith for Plaid

Sabrina Rinaldi, makeup and hair artist with Judy Inc. (and recent winner of the P&G Beauty and Grooming Award for Makeup Artist Of The Year), opens up her makeup bag for Plaid.

“What made me get into the beauty industry was a love of makeup from about the age of five. My dad owned a salon that I worked at on Saturdays from about the same age until well into my teens. I watched him do hair and my aunt do makeup and I loved it! I was really interested in the transformative qualities of hair and makeup. Although my dad started colouring my hair for me at eight-years-old, I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I was 12, so I used to do paintings with it instead. Once I was old enough, I did makeup on friends and myself whenever I got the chance.

My beauty routine is focused around keeping my oily problematic Italian skin under control. I use face soaps, scrubs and creams that all contain salicylic acid. It really works! I exfoliate every other day, use an astringent at night and an amazing cream by La Roche Posay called Effaclar Duo.

My crazy makeup wearing days are over now that I get to express myself in that way at work. I do the same hair and make up every day, and like a messy, ‘60s sort of look.  My routine consists of first curling my lashes and applying mascara. While the mascara dries I usually do my hair, which is a beehive-meets-ponytail. I use an eye kohl to do a cat eye on the outer corners of my eyes and smudge it out so it has a softer look. Next I apply another coat of mascara and finish with a tinted moisturizer, concealer and light dusting of powder. I usually apply a sheer nude lip color in the elevator on my way to work!

What’s in my makeup bag is at least two different mascaras because I like to layer up different formulas; two different tinted moisturizers (one in my winter colour and one in my summer colour) and I just mix them throughout the year to match my skin tone; a small selection of M.A.C makeup brushes that I shampoo and clean every other week, some bronzers, blushes, powders, et cetera, as well as my one and only lipstick color: Freckletone by M.A.C. I’ve been wearing it for almost ten years!

I am always trying new products for work, but for myself I tend to use the same things time and again. I absolutely love LashPerfection Mascara by CoverGirl. For my face, I use Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer. For my eyes I swear by Smolder Eye Kohl by M.A.C and use Brush 219 to smudge it out. To set my makeup, I am a big fan of the HD Finishing Powder by Make Up For Ever.”

Beauty secret from a beauty expert!

Always do your eye makeup before foundation – that way any falling particles of shadow won’t stick to your base. Makeup remover wipes are the best invention ever! Use them to clean up mistakes or to correct the edges of eye makeup blunders. Lastly, I am a big believer of two coats of mascara; one before eye makeup and one after to really bump up and thicken lashes!
