THE PHOTOGRAPHER & DIRECTOR TELLS US WHERE TO GO

As told to Odessa Paloma Parker
Javier Lovera has been keeping busy, shooting for Plaid’s winter print issue and Filler Magazine, campaigns, and films. When he’s not working, here’s how he spends his time.
ART
I love going to the Art Gallery of Ontario. Wednesday evenings are free – a great time to walk the gallery leisurely and discover new things. I always walk out inspired and having learned something. I also enjoy smaller galleries like Magic Pony, and the ones in 401 Richmond.
MUSIC
The Rex. I’ve been frequenting The Rex since I came to Toronto in 2006. I’ve met and heard amazing musicians there.
Tranzac also has amazing people playing in a very intimate and cozy environment; make sure to check out Christine Bougie and Dafydd Hughes on Mondays at 7p.m., two of my favourite musicians in Toronto.
CITY WALK
I like the small streets and the water front. Also, Dovercourt and Argyle is one of my favourite intersections. I like the neighbourhoods and streets with big trees and townhouses.
SATURDAYS
If I’m not shooting I try to stay at home, walk to the park or grab brunch with Kristina (my wife). It never hurts to go and catch a movie at
Cinematheque.
BRUNCH
There are a few really nice places. Kalendar on College Street has amazing food and a very nice design. Recently I went to La Société and ate the best short rib beef hash I’ve ever had. For a smaller appetite, the almond croissants at Nadège are incredible.
BOOKS
Type (at Queen Street and Trinity Bellwoods) is my new favourite. I’ve been struggling to find a neighborhood bookstore after Pages closed. Type seems like an amazing alternative right now.
