BE BOLD IN THE SEASON’S MOST ATTENTION-GETTING LIP LOOK

Story by Amanda Elizabeth Smith

From fluoro to dark crimson, red lipstick is one of the biggest makeup trends this fall. It’s been a classic look ever since Marilyn Monroe’s white dress flew up over a New York City subway grille, and this fall cherry lips were seen all over the runways and red carpets. Just remember, the trick to pulling off red lipstick is confidence! There’s no need to be intimidated by this trend; when worn correctly, red lipstick is a very polished and elegant look. Plus, it’s a great way to spice up your ordinary makeup routine. So pucker up because Plaid picked out our fave red lipsticks to give you the perfect pout!

ROUGE d’ Armani in 400

For those of you who thought that you couldn’t pull of red lipstick, you have certainly not tried ROUGE d’ Armani in 400. This lipstick is well, just plain perfect. There’s a bit of blue in the undertone, but a warm base makes this a colour that will look great on any skin tone. And the best thing about this lipstick is that it is a true red! Not too orange, too vibrant or too dark, just simply red. While this lipstick’s a definite splurge, it’s well worth splashing out for.

M.A.C Lipstick in Ruby Woo

If you love matte lips, then look no further because M.A.C’s Ruby Woo is a stellar blue-red hue. The colour is a “retro” red, so think of the lipstick that stars like Dita Von Teese and Gwen Stefani wear (these ladies are certainly lipstick inspirations for us at Plaid!). The texture of this lipstick is amazingly thick, rich and long-lasting! Need we say more?

Clinique High Impact Lip Color SPF 15 in Red-y To Wear

Most people forget about protecting their dear old lips on the daily, but wearing sunscreen on your pout is just as important as wearing it on your face! For those who are forgetful, there are lipsticks like Clinique’s High Impact Lip Colour in Red-y To Wear, which has an SPF 15 so your lips will not only look super slick, but be protected to. This high impact lip colour provides intense moisturization and lasts up to eight hours! The colour is a more subtle red (great for day time) with a beautiful soft satin finish, making it an ideal choice for those just trying out the red trend.

Estée Lauder Signature Lipstick in Rich Red

This colour is a classic. Medium-red, its creamy formula goes on smoothly and provides great moisture. With this lipstick there’s is no need to apply a lip balm beforehand like with some other reds (the intense colour can be very drying). This is one colour that people will stop you on the street to ask what you are wearing – it is just that pretty!

M.A.C Lipstick in Russian Red

Remember Ginger Spice? Russian Red is a lipstick that we think Ms. Geri Haliwell would absolutely wear. It’s bold, dramatic and utterly eye-catching. Like M.A.C’s Ruby Woo, Russian Red is a very matte lipstick, with an intense bluish-red hue that goes well with most skin tones. Because it is so matte it can be a bit drying on some; applying a clear gloss on top not only makes the colour more vibrant and rich, but will also help hold colour in place for longer wear!

Beauty Tip: Don’t forget to line lips beforehand. Try M.A.C’s Lip Pencil in Redd to prevent lipstick from bleeding!
