As far as DJ girl crushing goes, Toronto-based DJ Lucie tops our list. Sexy, stylish, and cool – this girl holds her own within the male-dominated world of the decks. Throughout her ten year DJ career, Lucie has also danced professionally in the Toronto and Vancouver dance communities, and is the founder of SWAGUAR dance crew. When behind the decks, Lucie gets the dance floor nice and sweaty by mixing a wide variety of genres into her set. She says: techno, classic house, disco, rock, hip-hop, Motown, funk and pop. We say: hot!
Who were your favourite artists to listen to while growing up?
Joy Division/New Order, The Cure, Frank Zappa, TONS of Hip Hop (Maestro Fresh Wes was my first cassette at 5yrs old) Eazy-E, Skinny Puppy, NIN, all the nineties electronica.
What attracted you to DJing?
DJing found me! I went to my first party when I was 15, saw Florida Breaks Mike and Charlie and fell in love. Two months later, I had two tech 12s and was playing parties.
What advice would you give to aspiring female DJs?
Do you. Find your own sound, play what you love, and of course practice!
What can partygoers expect when they catch a Lucie set?
A wild dance floor with a mix of new and classic, deep and tough tunes. There’s usually a lot of bass going around.
Where are we most likely to find you DJing?
Toronto’s West End, places like The Drake, Social, Wrongbar, and Andy Poolhall.
What are your favourite tracks of the moment?
Lee Foss – U Got Me
Fram – Blawan
Anything from Dakota, Bassanovva, Nacho Lovers, and Egyptrixx
What are your thoughts on the new generation of iPod DJs?
Well, they’re obviously not too serious. It’s good for the industry to keep the competition going. You can have the fancy laptop and Serato, but can you rock a crowd?
What are your style tips to keep it glam behind the decks?
Always bring a pair of flats and get a laptop stand if you like to wear low-cut tops. Also, invest in proper earplugs – Tinnitus is not cute.
How do you balance your DJ schedule and running SWAGUAR?
A smart phone, organization and the strength to run on no sleep!
How do you combine the two?
I’m working with The Chick-A-Boom-Room to bring the club night and dance show experience together. I DJ as LuLu Larue, and play lots of fun, sexy, girly tunes.
If we were to go on a date, where would you take us?
Parts and Labour. Great food upstairs and solid bands downstairs.
Who is your number one crush of the moment?
Araabmuzik for his MPC skill, and my boyfriend (Darcy Scott of Toronto promo company, DMoney).
Lucie plays in Vancouver tonight (December 15th) at 881 Granville St. Get more info here!
